Dr Chitra Shegar

​

  • PhD in Second Language Acquisition - University of Western Australia (2004)  

  • Masters in English Language - National University of Singapore (1992)

  • Bachelors in English Language and Literature - National University of Singapore (1986)

  • Diploma in Education - National Institute of Education, Singapore (1987)

Her areas of specialisation are Reading/Literacy Instruction, Second Language Acquisition, Language Teaching Methodology and Children’s Literature.

 

Dr Shegar has received more than half a million SGD in grants for reading and literacy research projects and programmes to date. She has conducted more than 200 workshops for teachers in several schools and educational institutions in Singapore and abroad. Internationally, she has been invited to conduct teaching seminars in Australia, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, UK and USA. She regularly also conducts workshops for parents and students. In 2010, she was conferred the title of ‘International Visiting Scholar to Wheelock 2011-2012’ in recognition of her expertise in early literacy instruction based on evidence-based practices.

In 2015, Dr. Chitra founded Reading Edge Academy (READ) Pte Ltd, an organisation that consults on all matters pertaining to reading and reading pedagogy
