A key preoccupation of Singapore parents is how to get their kids to achieve academic excellence. To this end, they invest in all kinds of enrichment programmes as well as reading programs. But the kinds of reading programmes that they invest in, often does not promote reading for pleasure. In fact according to Steven Layne education systems all over the world have invested a lot on the “HOW” to read but not the “WILL” to read. Investing in the WILL to read develops children into avid lifelong readers. Extensive reading of quality children’s literature imbibes in them different types of knowledge priming their excellence in school and the global world.
